LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Republican Bill Schuette and Democrat Gretchen Whitmer have agreed to meet for two debates before Michigan's gubernatorial election.

After weeks of negotiations, their campaigns announced Friday that the debates will be held on Oct. 12 at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids and on Oct. 24 at WDIV-TV in Detroit. The two debates will be the most between the major parties' nominees since 2006, when there were three.

There was just one debate each in the 2014 and 2010 gubernatorial elections. Second-term Republican Gov. Rick Snyder is leaving office under term limits.

The debates will be televised live by the sponsoring stations, streamed online and are expected to be simulcast by other TV stations in most other parts of the state, according to the Whitmer and Schuette campaigns.
